Happy New Year's, kids! It's time to start the year fresh and the best place to start is by doing a sweep of your makeup bag and bathroom cabinet to clear out old and funky products. Not only will this prevent clutter and potential infection (ick!), it will allow you to make room for new cosmetics and body products (yay!).
A good rule of thumb is if it smells questionable, toss it. Humidity, temperature changes, and the level of preservatives can effect the longevity of makeup and bath and body products, and when in doubt, throw it the heck out.
Here's a handy checklist:
- Mascara should be tossed every 3 months, as it breeds bacteria like no one's business. If it's dry and clumpy, introduce it to the trashcan.
- Lipsticks, glosses, and balms will typically hold for anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 years, but be sure to throw it out if it smells different or changes color. That's a sure sign that it's past its prime. In love with the shade and it's discontinued? Don't sacrifice your health for the long kiss goodbye with your favorite shade. - Liquid and cream foundations get a bit tricky, especially if you use your fingers to apply as this introduces bacteria into the product. Typically, 6 months to 1 year is the expected lifespan of these types of products. An oil-based foundation will last a bit longer.
- If you've made the switch to mineral powders for your foundation, blush, and bronzers, your cosmetics will hold for a good 2 years before you'll need to toss it. Phantom Limb, headed up by the sweet-as-can-be Stephanie, also helped organize the event and is a contributor to the Handmade Detroit blog.
The show was on from 10am until 8pm, and the customers came in strong and steady. It was a pleasure getting to meet new people and share my products with them, and I was happy to see some familiar faces.
The 2007 Detroit Urban Craft Fair was amazingly organized and featured a diverse selection of Michigan's hottest handcrafters.

First stop is Brooklyn for some much needed R&R and crafty fun at the Etsy Labs. I can't wait to see what the cool kids are cooking up these days! I will be joined by the delectable Fort Cloudy, during which time hijinks will ensue. I'm pretty sure we'll end up wandering the streets of Jersey City and ending up at a Sweet 16 party like we did last time.
Next up is the Detroit Urban Craft Fair held at the Majestic Theater August 4. I will be staying with Melissa, otherwise known as the fabulous Relishdress on Etsy, and we plan on spending our time watching bad television, eating Mackinac fudge, and playing with her Gocco.
I'm really looking forward for some time with my friends and to cook up some new ideas for Lollibomb.

I am totally hooked on StumbleUpon, which is a cool, free service that allows you to bookmark websites and even photos of things you like online. What's super handy about this is that you can access your favorite sites anytime, and by installing the StumbleUpon toolbar in your browser, you are able to randomly web surf based on your specified preferences.
